SNP have took a Renfrewshire Council seat from Labour after winning the Renfrew South & Gallowhill by-election.
Jim Paterson is now one of three Councillors representing the area after Labour was beaten into second in first-preference votes.
The election was triggered after the death of Labour Councillor Eddie Grady who was one of three Councillors representing Renfrew South and Gallowhill ward on Renfrewshire Council.
Turnout on Thursday was very low at 26.2%.
Gavin Newlands MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North said: “Congratulations to Jim Paterson on being elected as the new Councillor for Renfrew South and Gallowhill.
“Jim campaigned tirelessly to secure this seat from Labour and he will be a strong voice for the area.
“The Labour Party which runs Renfrewshire Council should take note of this result as the voters have sent a very loud and clear message about the out-of-touch and complacent way they’re running Renfrewshire Council. It was evident on the doorstep, and proven by the result, that the voters are deeply angry with the decision to downgrade the recycling units across Renfrewshire.
“Labour-controlled Renfrewshire Council must respond with urgency on this particular issue.”
Commenting on the by-election victory, Renfrewshire North & West MSP Derek Mackay said: “This is a fantastic win for the SNP. As constituency MSP I look forward to working closely with Jim, doing what is best for the local community and Renfrewshire as a whole.
“The people of Renfrew & Gallowhill have spoken and sent a clear message that they are not happy with the actions of the Labour Administration in Renfrewshire Council. I hope they will take notice.”
