University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is holding a celebration event at its Paisley Campus on Thursday 9th February 2017 to mark 50 years of delivering social science education in Paisley. The event will see former students and staff come together to look back on the last 50 years as well as looking to the future and the continued success of social science education at UWS. Organised by the School of Media, Culture & Society and the University’s Alumni Association, it will also provide an excellent opportunity for former students and staff to network and discuss their time at the University.
The event, hosted by Professor Derek Carson, Dean of the School of Media, Culture & Society, will include a welcome by Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS, a talk from Professor Chik Collins of the School of Media, Culture & Society and will culminate in the screening of a specially commissioned student film providing an insight into 50 years of teaching social science at the University.
Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS said: “It is excellent to be able to reflect on a successful half century of social sciences education at the University. We are therefore delighted to be hosting this event and to celebrate with former students and staff and reflect on their experiences.
“It also provides an opportunity to be able to celebrate the extremely popular scholarship scheme which the University ran to celebrate 50 years of social sciences at UWS. The special 50th anniversary scheme saw a total of 15 scholarships for the current academic session (session 2016/17) being awarded for selected Masters courses across the University’s School of Media, Culture and Society and we wish the scholarship students every success in their studies.”
In session 1966-1967, the Department of Social Studies was created to organise the then Paisley College of Technology’s teaching and research in the social sciences. The department was responsible for the BA Social Studies degree and would go on to develop programmes with specialisms in Social Work, Politics, Psychology, Public and Social Policy, Criminal Justice and postgraduate programmes in Careers Guidance and Alcohol and Drug Studies. Today the University’s Social Science and Creative and Cultural portfolios have been brought together in the new School of Media, Culture & Society.
