Councillors are set to discuss centre strategies for Braehead and Linwood.
The strategies highlight each area’s strengths and potential for future development, as well as explaining their importance to all of Renfrewshire.
The purpose of the Braehead Centre Strategy and the Linwood Town Centre Strategy is to ensure the two areas can thrive, grow and adapt to changing circumstances if the need arises.
They were prepared following a consultation in 2015 to establish the aspirations of local communities and other stakeholders.
Councillor Terry Kelly, the convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Planning and Property Policy Board, said: “We have a ‘centres first’ approach that reflects the importance of our commercial, cultural and social hubs to Renfrewshire as a whole.
“People travel into these areas for work and leisure, so ensuring they have positive and sustainable futures is absolutely crucial.
“Braehead brings in more than 17 million visitors a year and it is widely recognised as having a strategic role in providing retail, cultural and leisure activities for people throughout Renfrewshire and even across the wider Glasgow City Region.
“This centre strategy sets out opportunities to build on its success and improve the visitor experience even further.”
Opportunities highlighted within the proposed Braehead Centre Strategy include improving entrance ‘gateways’ and enhancing walking and cycling routes between it and Renfrew.
This is identified as a way to further stimulate regeneration of Renfrew Riverside, through benefits such as unlocking the potential of under-used sites in the Meadowside area.
The separate Linwood Town Centre Strategy which will also be considered by councillors identifies opportunities to enhance its role.
Councillor Kelly explained: “Significant investment in Linwood town centre over recent years has improved access and delivered high quality public spaces that can be used for a range of events.
“The complete transformation of the town centre has already succeeded in making it a focus for community activity and is encouraging further private sector investment.
“Not a single retail unit in Linwood town centre is currently unoccupied and we want to build on this success.
“The Linwood Town Centre Startegy identifies potential for new investment in residential and business uses that support the town centre , and promoting development will help to grow the local economy.”
Renfrewshire Council’s Planning and Property Policy Board will consider the two centre strategies during its meeting on Tuesday 14th March.
