Socialist Party Scotland will hold a public meeting on the general election on “Tories Out, Socialist Policies Can Win!” Thursday 1st June 7pm, Gallowhill Community Centre Netherhill Rd, Paisley PA3 4SF. All welcome
Speakers will include, Scottish Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition local council election candidates Richard Neville and Jim Halfpenny, EIS FELA college lecturers who recently won a national strike for fair pay.
Socialist Party Scotland is part of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC). Scottish TUSC stood in the recent Scottish council elections to provide an anti-austerity and socialist alternative to SNP and right-wing Labour councillors who are both carrying out savage cuts. We are not, however, standing in this general election. Socialist Party Scotland does not support any party that is carrying out cuts – that includes the SNP and Scottish Labour. We do support Jeremy Corbyn campaigning on socialist policies. We’ll write to individual candidates in Scotland, including Labour and the SNP, inviting them to sign up to an anti-austerity and socialist platform. Only local candidates that stand against all cuts, for public ownership, a £10 an hour living wage and workers’ rights deserve support. See attached our socialist general election manifesto.
Richard Neville” Socialist Party Scotland is not neutral in this election. We want to see the Tories defeated and Jeremy Corbyn win on socialist policies. We understand that many will vote SNP to try and ensure the Tories are driven out. While we support Corbyn’s anti-austerity stand, had the policies we have argued for – including introducing mandatory reselection of MPs. the democratisation of the party, changing the disastrous policy of blanket opposition to Scottish independence and calling on Labour councillors to refuse to make cuts – been implemented, the anti-austerity wing of the Labour Party would be in a much stronger position than they are. Jeremy Corbyn should organise mass rallies in every town and city across Britain. A major trade union demonstration in opposition to austerity should also take place. If the SNP leadership were really left and anti-austerity they too could assist in building an alternative to austerity-laden capitalism. As it is the SNP are in danger of losing seats to the Tories in Scotland, paying a price for letting down the hopes of many who backed them in 2015. We’ll write to individual candidates in Scotland, including Labour and the SNP, inviting them to sign up to an anti-austerity and socialist platform. Only local candidates that stand against all cuts, for public ownership, a £10 an hour living wage and workers’ rights deserve support.”
