Time is running out to support Renfrewshire Council in the Digital Leaders 100 Awards.
The Council has been shortlisted for Digital Council of the Year and Cross-sector Digital Collaboration of the Year with Roar: Connections for Life for its tablet classes for older people at the prestigious awards, which celebrate teams and individuals who are championing digital transformation in all sectors across the UK.
It is one of only two Scottish local authorities to be shortlisted in the Digital Council of the Year category.
Paisley YMCA has also been nominated for Digital Charity of the Year.
The Council launched its digital strategy, which focuses on tackling digital exclusion, in September 2016.
Digital exclusion is a problem that often affects those on low incomes, older adults and people with disabilities or long-term health conditions.
The strategy is designed to promote digital participation, helping those who face the most barriers to getting online first and making sure everyone in Renfrewshire has the opportunity to reach their digital potential.
Diane Webb, Project Manager (Digital Assistance) at Renfrewshire Council, said: “We are delighted to have made the shortlist for the UK Digital Leaders awards. Out of the 100 strong shortlist, Renfrewshire Council makes up three of the 16 overall Scottish nominations.
“We are targeting our resources and efforts towards those who face the most barriers to getting online. We believe if we get it right for them first then we will get it right for everyone.”
The Council launched its ‘Roar Do Tablets’ classes for the elderly with Roar: Connections for Life in October 2016. The classes are delivered over six weeks to people aged 65-years-old and over.
Paul Cameron, Digital Participation Officer at Renfrewshire Council who delivers the tablet classes, said: “We are honoured to be shortlisted for the Digital Leaders awards.
“It would be great for the students, staff, volunteers and all the people in the background who keep the classes running if we won. All my fingers are crossed.”
