Quarriers charity has thanked the former Lady Captain at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club, Karen Binning, for her fundraising efforts last year, raising £835.00 for the local health and social care charity.

As Lady Captain, Karen was able to choose a charity to raise funds for during her tenure and she chose Quarriers as she has a family connection with the charity.

Quarriers is now one of Scotland’s largest providers of social care, however, it was once a children’s home for orphaned and destitute children.

Karen’s grandmother and her two great uncles were admitted to the children’s home in 1910.

Aged just six years old, her grandmother and her two older brothers went to Quarriers village after their father died of typhoid and their mother had to undergo surgery. The children’s grandparents did their best to look after them, but with other younger children around to look after, it was felt the three older siblings could cope with the move.

The children left Quarriers in 1915, by then Karen’s grandmother would have been 11, to go back to live with their mother as she had remarried.

Karen said: “I wanted to raise money for Quarriers as my dad was so fascinated by the whole story. He had never mentioned this story until we moved from the east coast to Bridge of Weir, and he found out that Quarriers Village was so close by.”

The team at the golf club raised funds by having a charity bunker, where players paid £1 if they landed in it; they had a Tri-Am tournament which had a £5 entry fee; a Bridge afternoon and the funds from the raffle at the Annual Dinner were donated to Quarriers.

Louise Strachan, Quarriers Events and Community Fundraiser said: “We are very grateful to Karen for choosing Quarriers as her preferred charity during her time as Lady Captain and to everyone who supported her. This fantastic donation will allow us to continue providing care and support to those who need it most.”
