A Paisley volunteer who has spent more than a decade helping children and families discover a love of reading has been named Scotland’s Bookbug Hero 2026.

Margaret Brook, who volunteers with the STAR Project in Paisley, received the national honour from the Scottish Book Trust in recognition of her long-standing commitment to supporting families through weekly Bookbug groups.

Margaret has volunteered at the STAR Project since 2011 and has led Bookbug activities for more than 12 years, creating what families describe as a joyful, welcoming and safe environment for toddlers and parents alike.

The STAR Project announced the award with an emotional tribute to “oor Margaret”, praising the warmth, kindness and consistency she brings every week.

The organisation said: “Anyone who knows ‘oor Margaret’ will know just how deserved this is. Week after week, she brings warmth, joy, songs, stories and a deep sense of safety to the families who come through our doors.”

Bookbug is a national early years programme which uses songs, rhymes and storytelling to encourage literacy and bonding between children and carers.

Families attending the Wee STARs group said Margaret’s weekly gatherings are often the highlight of their week, with many parents continuing songs and rhymes at home after learning them during sessions.

One parent said: “She gets everyone to sit down with her stories. You can hear a pin drop. Us, the children and the staff all sit and listen. When they get to choose their character for the rhymes, they’re always so excited and proud. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Bookbug Session like it.”

The STAR Project said Margaret’s work has helped shape the toddler group into a trusted community hub where families feel supported, connected and less isolated.

Her impact has also been seen in children’s development. One mother told organisers her toddler, who had struggled with speech, sang their first full song after attending Margaret’s sessions.

Sharon McAulay, chief executive at the STAR Project, said: “Margaret is a true stalwart of STAR. Her steadfastness and consistency bring a deep sense of safety to everyone she works with.

“She brings joy to every wee face, support to caregivers, and her Bookbug Sessions are held in the highest regard by staff for their exceptional quality.

“Margaret has always been a Bookbug Hero to us, and we can think of no more deserving person to receive this award.”

The award is supported by Walker Books and recognises individuals across Scotland who use Bookbug to make a positive difference in their communities.

Margaret said she was “really surprised” to receive the award.

She said: “I feel that my passion for reading and being able to pass this on to young children is an honour beyond words.

“If I can pass on my love of books, I feel I will have done a good job.”
