A 40mph speed limit is proposed on sections of Southbar Road and Bridgeway in Erskine alongside a new walking and cycling route.
The proposed limit would cover the A726 between Southholm Roundabout and Centreholm Roundabout.
Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board will consider the proposals on Wednesday, 4th November 2026.
Council officers recommend proceeding despite three objections to the traffic order.
Objectors questioned whether reducing the limit would improve safety. They also raised concerns about longer journey times, driver frustration, congestion and whether drivers would comply with a limit they considered unsuitable for the road.
One objection compared the proposal with other roads where shared walking and cycling paths have been introduced while higher speed limits have remained.
Officers say the new route means the road now serves people walking, wheeling and cycling as well as motorists.
They say vehicle speed affects both actual safety and how safe people feel when using walking and cycling infrastructure.
The report says the proposal follows guidance from the council’s consultant designer and Transport Scotland’s Cycling by Design guidance.
Officers also say the proposal does not depend on demonstrating an existing collision problem. They describe it as part of the council’s duty to provide a safer and more inclusive transport network.
Councillors are being asked to consider the objections and approve the traffic order if those objections are not upheld.
The board can decide whether to proceed with the order in full, in part or not at all, or appoint an independent reporter to consider the objections.
