Police have outlined plans to tackle fireworks-related problems and festive retail crime across Renfrewshire.
Operation Moonbeam will run from 31st October to 7th November, with police working alongside the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and other partners.
Councillors heard the plans at Renfrewshire Council’s Police and Fire and Rescue Scrutiny Sub-Committee on Tuesday, 27th October 2026.
Officers said the work would focus on prevention, helping people understand the risks around fireworks and gathering information about unplanned or unauthorised events.
Once the operation ends, police will move into their festive plans.
Community policing teams are working directly with the national Retail Crime Task Force to tackle shoplifting.
The new community investigation hub will also help identify links between retail crimes and repeat offenders.
Police said that information would be used to disrupt offending in the run-up to Christmas.
Councillors welcomed the preparations and highlighted the impact shoplifting can have on smaller local businesses.
The fire service also confirmed that Bonfire Night planning had been carried out with partners to help protect the public and staff working during the busy period.
Police said further detail on festive policing could be brought back to the committee.
The written police report records a reduction in shoplifting during the period from 1st April to 31st August 2026, although it does not give a separate shoplifting total.
