More than £500 million of new funding is being invested to help improve access to GP services across Scotland — including practices in Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire.

The Scottish Government announced that an additional £531 million will be directed into General Practice to boost staff numbers, support day-to-day operations, and make it easier for people to book and attend appointments.

Health Secretary Neil Gray said the investment will help strengthen local services and ease pressures on primary care, particularly during busy periods.

Recent figures show an increase in the number of GPs working across Scotland, while new walk-in clinics are being planned to operate in the evenings and at weekends.

Local MSP Tom Arthur welcomed the funding, saying it will make a real difference for people accessing GP services locally.

He said: “This funding of over half a billion pounds will boost staff numbers and capacity within GP practices, making it easier for people in Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire to access their GP.

“It follows plans to open walk-in GP clinics which will provide greater flexibility for patients, particularly those who struggle to attend during working hours.”

The move forms part of a wider effort to improve access to primary care and reduce waiting times across NHS Scotland.
