A motion going before Renfrewshire Council next week calls for the creation of an official fan zone in the area for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The motion, submitted by councillors Jim Paterson and Andy Steel, welcomes Scotland’s achievement in qualifying for the tournament and recognises the pride and community spirit it has sparked across the country.

It asks council officers to investigate the feasibility of setting up a Renfrewshire Fan Zone during the World Cup, giving local people a dedicated place to gather, watch matches and take part in the wider buzz of the tournament.

Cllr Jim Paterson told Renfrewshire News: “Scotland reaching the World Cup has created a real sense of excitement, and many people want to share that feeling together.

“A Fan Zone could give supporters, including a new generation of young fans, the chance to enjoy the games in a safe, welcoming setting and really feel part of the occasion. My motion simply asks the Council to explore what might be possible so we can make the most of this moment for our communities.”

If approved, officers will report back to the next appropriate Policy Board with options on how a fan zone could be delivered.

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with Scotland returning to the tournament for the first time since 1998. Scotland find out tonight who they will face in the competition.
