Gardeners in Bridge of Weir are being invited to a social evening this week as the Bridge of Weir Horticultural Society begins its new season.
The club will meet on Thursday 12th March at 8pm in the Parish (Freeland) Church Hall for an informal “Sow & Grow” session focused on seeds, sowing tips and preparing gardens for spring.
Members and visitors are encouraged to bring along any spare seeds from last year to exchange with others. Free seed packets and compost will also be available during the evening.
The event is designed as a relaxed way for gardeners to share experiences from the winter months and get advice on common issues such as seed germination, early plant growth and protecting plants from frost.
Organisers say the evening is also a chance for newcomers to the village or those new to gardening to meet other local gardeners and learn more about growing plants.
Gardeners will also hear advice on seasonal tasks as gardens begin to wake up after a mild winter. One tip shared by the club is to avoid mowing lawns too early in the year. Grass usually becomes hardy enough to resist frost after the Spring Equinox on 22nd March, so lawns should be left until growth reaches around 5cm to 8cm before the first light cut.
The evening will finish with refreshments, a chat and the society’s usual raffle.
