A bus service linking Dargavel and Braehead is set to end in May after low passenger numbers meant there was no case to keep it running in its current form.

The update was given to councillors at Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board on Wednesday 18th March as part of a wider service update report.

Officers said the 514 service had previously been extended from January 2026 to May 2026, but that there was now no prospect of a further extension.

The route has been funded through a Section 75 agreement linked to the housing development, but that funding will expire in May.

The report said Strathclyde Partnership for Transport had tested the market to see whether there was interest in taking the route forward, but was told the service was not sustainable because of low patronage.

Councillors said the loss of the service would be disappointing, particularly given the pressure to reduce reliance on private cars and improve public transport links in growing communities.

Labour councillor Chris Gilmour said it was sad to see the service go and asked whether the route could be modified to make it financially viable.

He said that, with the council and other public bodies encouraging people to use public transport, it was important to look again at whether a revised service might work better.

Conservative councillor James MacLaren said he was not surprised by the position, describing the reliability of the service as poor, but agreed that other options should still be explored because congestion in the area was only likely to get worse.

Officers told the meeting that alternative options had been considered previously, including a link into an existing Erskine service, but communities had wanted a direct connection to Braehead.

They said discussions would continue with SPT to look at what opportunities might still exist to improve public transport access for Dargavel residents.

The same service update report also included progress on district heating plans, active travel schemes, waste services, road works, play parks and public electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
