Johnstone Burgh have been praised for their community impact during their Scottish Communities Cup run, despite exiting this season’s competition.
Scottish Community FA President Bobby McNamara said the club would be disappointed to go out at this stage as holders, following their run to the trophy last year.
He said: “They’ll be disappointed going out at this stage, being the holders of the cup, and everything that it brought to the town last year.
“When we talk about community, they’ve absolutely shown us how to use the trophy to push the community.
“They were around everywhere. I think Brian was around everywhere. He was around all the sponsors, he was around all the schools, they had the trophy in the town square, they were around all the care homes and that.
“Brilliant meeting the former players. George last year was a guest at our dinner to show us a medal from the last time they won it, and the story behind how he’d lost the medal and found it again, then taking him down into the dressing room after the game to meet Dale Espin and getting photographs of the two cup captains together, you know, 50 years apart.
Richard Henderson added: “That’s what the competition’s all about.”
Bobby McNamara continued: “He said: ‘Definitely is. You know, it’s about tradition, but it’s also about looking forward as well, that’s the area we’re looking to push forward.’”
