Erskine Veterans Charity has appointed Major General Alastair Bruce of Crionaich as a new ambassador.
The former Governor of Edinburgh Castle will support the organisation’s work with veterans across Scotland.
Major General Bruce is a senior British Army reservist and officer of arms in the Royal Household. He is also known to television audiences as a commentator on major national events for Sky News and previously the BBC.
His broadcasting work has included coverage of royal occasions such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, royal weddings and the Coronation in 2023, as well as state funerals including those of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Queen Mother, the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II.
He is also widely recognised as the historical adviser to ITV series Downton Abbey, where he made cameo appearances throughout all six series, including a speaking role as Lord Chamberlain in the 2013 Christmas Special.
The charity said his connection with Erskine developed during his time as Governor of Edinburgh Castle, when he met chief executive Ian Cumming and visited the organisation’s facilities.
Erskine later hosted the 21-gun Royal Salute to mark the accession of King Charles III, an event attended by residents and staff. The King has been patron of the charity for many years.
Ian Cumming, Chief Executive at Erskine, said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Major General Alastair Bruce as the latest Ambassador for Erskine Veterans Charity. His longstanding commitment to honouring military service, along with his deep understanding of our armed forces community, makes him a natural champion for our work. Everyone within our Veteran family who has met Major General Bruce has been struck by his warmth, insight and genuine interest in our evolving care, accommodation, and community services. We look forward to working closely with him as we continue to expand our support for Veterans across Scotland.”
Major General Bruce added: “Scottish veterans are our collective ‘national treasure’, and, if life turns badly, Erskine catches and lifts them up, with care, dignity and the warmth of an unending highland welcome.
“After serving as a Scottish soldier for 45 years, and knowing the history of Scotland’s martial tradition, I look forward to raising awareness of the mission of Erskine Veterans Charity, wherever it helps the staff and residents.
“We all need to promote Erskine, in Scotland and across our worldwide diaspora: because it’s a gripping story and as much for us to be proud of as the victories our servicemen and women have won, throughout our national story, since Bannockburn.”
