Pupils and staff at Bargarran Primary School in Erskine are celebrating after achieving a Gold Rights Respecting School Award for the third time.

The school first received the highest level of UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting Schools Award in 2019 and has continued to build on its work promoting children’s rights across the curriculum and wider community.

Bargarran’s Rights Respecting Schools Pupil Parliament plays a key role in maintaining the Gold award. Pupils work together to develop new initiatives while continuing existing projects aimed at raising awareness and understanding of children’s rights.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award recognises schools that place the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of their planning, policies and everyday practice. The programme aims to create school communities where children’s rights are learned, taught, respected, protected and promoted.

Selena Kennedy, Depute Head Teacher, said: “We are very proud to be recognised with the highest level of UNICEF’s UK Rights Respecting School award for the third time. Children’s rights are at the core of our school’s ethos and curriculum. Staff and pupils discuss children’s rights in classes and rights are a regular feature of whole school assemblies.

“A respect for children’s rights permeates all aspects of school life and we seek every opportunity to expand children’s knowledge on the UNCRC. We also aim to build responsible citizens who are confident to speak out about, and take action for, children’s rights. Our pupil parliament’s current aim is to share our learning with the wider community.”

Education Convener Councillor Emma Rodden congratulated the school on the achievement.

She said: “This is a fantastic achievement for everyone at Bargarran Primary School. Earning the Gold Rights Respecting School award for the third time shows the school’s commitment to putting children’s rights at the centre of everything they do.

“Pupils, staff and the wider school community are dedicated to championing respect, inclusion and wellbeing every day. Their work strengthens the school community by empowering young people with the confidence and values they will carry throughout their lives. I am incredibly proud of all they have accomplished.”

The award recognises the school’s ongoing commitment to ensuring children’s rights remain central to school life while encouraging pupils to become active and responsible citizens within their community.
