A man has been killed by an elephant during a trek on the paradise island of Koh Samui in Thailand.

Gareth Crowe, 36, from Linwood was thrown from the Asian bull elephant and trampled on. He was also stabbed with the elephants tusk.

His 16-year-old daughter, Eilidh Hughes, was also ridding the elephant but suffered minor injuries.

She is thought to have escaped with her life after the elephant ran into the forest.

Mr Crowes wife and son are also on holiday in Thailand but did not go on the trek.

A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We are offering support to the family of a British national who has sadly died following an incident in Koh Samui, Thailand, and are making contact with the local authorities to seek further information.”
