The Thomas Coats Memorial church in Paisley is to close.

The closure comes because of growing financial pressure and a declining congregation.

It is expected to close within five years and the congregation will leave the 19th century building which they have been part of for over 100 years.

The Victorian Gothic building, which is sandstone in colour with a crown spire has dominated Paisley’s skyline since it was built in 1894.

Church officials are now looking into other options and are making plans to see how the building can be maintained in the future.

The church follows a growing pattern across Scotland with more churches and church groups closing due to financial difficulties.

It was announced recently that St James’ church in Underwood Road, Paisley will close this year.

The church, also known as ‘Baptist Cathedral of Europe’ was built by Hippolyte Jean Blanc, a Scottish architect after entering a competition which was held in 1885 for the design.
