Local football heroes are being urged to show off their skills in a special 5-a-side tournament – the Renfrewshire Fairtrade Cup.

Battling it out on the pitch, 16 teams will demonstrate their footwork by scoring goals with Fairtrade footballs.

The winning team will receive the Renfrewshire Fairtrade Trophy and Fairtrade prizes.

Over 70% of footballs are made in Sialkot, Pakistan but only 1% are sold under Fairtrade conditions.

Fairtrade supports farmers and workers to get a fairer deal helping them to reinvest in their business, pay for their children to get an education and support their local community.

Kick-off at the free-to-attend event is 1.30pm on Sunday 9 August at the Five-on-5 pitches, Paisley.

Councillor Jim Sharkey, Chair of the Renfrewshire Fairtrade Steering Group, said: “Football production is one area of Fairtrade that is really behind where it should be. The fact that Pakistan produces almost three-quarters of the world’s footballs but less than 1% sold are Fairtrade is shocking.

“The tournament promises to be a feast of football for any football enthusiast and I would urge people to make sure they get their team signed up.”

Teams must have no more than seven players and players must be aged 16 or over.
