Police Scotland, along with other government bodies carried out a road traffic enforcement initiative in Hillington.

Yesterday local officers from Police Scotland supported by partner agencies including HMRC, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, Renfrewshire Trading Standards, Scottish Fire & Rescue Service and the British Transport Police carried out the checks.

The initiative was devised to support the British Transport Police’s Operation Scandium, targeting those involved in thefts and dealing in stolen metals, as well as local initiatives targeting those involved in bogus caller crimes.

Over 130 vehicles were stopped during the day with nine vehicles found to be in such a dangerous condition they were immediately prohibited from the road.

A number of road traffic fixed penalty tickets were issued to drivers for offences including no MOT, defective tyres and dangerous loads.

Eight drivers were also subject to reports to the Procurator Fiscal for offences including no insurance. Four vehicles were also seized by the police for being uninsured.

One male was found to be operating as a metal dealer without the appropriate local authority licence and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

Inspector Steven Espie who planned the day’s activities said, “Today’s operation is one of a series of targeted initiatives aimed at deterring and detecting those involved in committing crimes such as metal theft and bogus caller activities.

“Police Scotland works closely with other agencies to enforce legislation and target those who use the roads network to engage in criminality.

“We also take the opportunity to educate and advise motorists and drivers in terms of road traffic legislation, particularly those offences that directly contribute to increased casualty rates on our roads.

“Despite having carried our other enforcement campaigns in recent times, we still find persons using dangerous vehicles or operating without insurance, or persons engaging in licensed trades without the appropriate licence to do so.

“I am determined to take action to deter and detect those involved in thefts and other crimes of dishonesty to make our communities safer for all.”
