Campaigners will gather in Paisley today to call for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and to show support for the people of Palestine.
The Paisley for Palestine rally takes place this morning — Saturday 11th October at 11am — in County Square, with attendees asked to meet outside Gilmour Street Station.
Organisers say the event will feature speeches, live music and poetry as part of a peaceful call for a ceasefire and humanitarian justice.
The rally was arranged before Hamas and Israel agreed to the first phase of a Gaza peace plan. The deal paves the way for the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and the entry of vital aid. The release of hostages could begin as early as Monday.
The event will be opened by Professor Henry Maitles, a Jewish anti-zionist academic recognised for his work on Holocaust education in schools.
He will be followed by a range of local voices and performers, including:
- Poet and playwright Alex Cathcart
- Provost Lorraine Cameron
- Singers Kitti and Eddie Reid
- The Protest in Harmony choir
- Poet Shaun Moore
Trade unionists, politicians and community campaigners from across the movement are also expected to speak.
Organisers are urging people across Renfrewshire to attend and add their voice to calls for a lasting ceasefire and an end to the suffering in Gaza.
