Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate Grant Toghill has set out his party’s plans on the cost of living as campaigning continues ahead of the Scottish Parliament election on Thursday 7th May 2026. Grant Toghill is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Renfrewshire North and Cardonald constituency.

The party said its plans would include an emergency insulation programme to help bring down energy bills, support for cheaper and cleaner energy, changes to community benefit rules around renewable developments, a closer relationship with Europe to support business and a 10p cut in fuel duty.

Mr Toghill said people in Renfrewshire North and Cardonald were telling him their wages were not stretching as far as they used to, with family days out becoming less affordable.

He said: “Renfrewshire North and Cardonald has so much going for it, but right now, it feels like things aren’t working.

“People in Renfrewshire North and Cardonald tell me that their pay cheques just don’t go as far as they used to. Days out with kids or grandkids are becoming rare treats, rather than something everyone can enjoy.

“With our plans for an emergency insulation programme, Scottish Liberal Democrats will bring down energy bills and protect you from volatile fossil fuel prices.

“We will securely power Scotland with our own cheaper, cleaner energy. We will do that alongside re-writing community benefit rules, making them fairer, so that local people get much more of the money companies make from generating renewable energy near them.

“That’s on top of cutting fuel duty by 10p and making it easier to do business by stopping sudden tax hikes and creating the right environment for growth.

“If you like the sound of that, it’s time to back us on the peach, regional ballot paper in May.”

At the Scottish Parliament election, voters receive two ballot papers. One is for their constituency MSP and the other is the regional list ballot paper, which councils and election guidance for 2026 describe as peach-coloured.
