Bank of Scotland customers across Renfrewshire were left unable to access their money on Monday morning after a major outage hit banking and app services across the UK.

The disruption, caused by a failure at Amazon Web Services (AWS), affected digital banking for Bank of Scotland, Halifax and Lloyds, as well as a host of popular apps.

Snapchat, Roblox, Duolingo, Zoom and Ring doorbells were among the worst hit, with many local users reporting connection failures and login issues.

Parents flagged issues with gaming and social apps used by children and young people, while workers relying on services like Slack, Canva and Zoom struggled to log in. Some residents using Ring video doorbells said live feeds would not connect, raising concerns for people who use the cameras for home security or to check on vulnerable relatives.

Outage tracker Downdetector recorded more than 6.5 million reports globally, affecting over 1,000 companies. Complaints surged across Scotland on Monday morning, with the disruption also impacting government websites, online shopping, streaming platforms and fitness apps.

Amazon Web Services has confirmed it has fixed the underlying problem and most users can now access services again, but a full recovery is still ongoing.

Bank of Scotland, Snapchat, Duolingo, Zoom and Roblox were among the platforms most affected.

Residents and businesses who rely on cloud-based services have been warned there may still be some disruption as systems fully recover.
