A predator who raped and sexually assaulted two sleeping women at the same time has been locked up for six years.

James McDermott carried out the attacks on the strangers at a flat in Neilston, East Renfrewshire, in the early hours of 25th May, 2024.

The 25-year-old, of Maryhill, Glasgow, had earlier met the pair for the first time after being on a night out in the city.

McDermott only stopped when one of the victims screamed after realising what was happening.

The first offender was sentenced this week at the High Court in Glasgow, having earlier pled guilty to charges of rape and sexual assault.

The two victims had been on a night out together with others in the city centre.

A relative of one of the young women met a friend of McDermott whom she knew.

McDermott was also there – he was introduced as “Jinky”.

They all later left a pub in the city’s Sauchiehall Street and went back to the flat.

The rape victim eventually went to bed and fell asleep.

Prosecutor Kirsten Cockburn then explained: “She woke up when she felt pressure on top of her and someone with their hand squeezing around her neck.

“She was lying on her back. When she opened her eyes, McDermott was on top of her.”

The woman was “terrified” and “froze” on discovering McDermott was raping her.

She was crying throughout as McDermott demanded she be quiet.

Miss Cockburn said: “She said stop repeatedly, but he continued.”

As this was happening, McDermott then molested the other young woman, who was also asleep next to him.

This victim soon became aware of what was happening to her and started to sob before screaming.

It was only then that a semi-naked McDermott stopped. He quickly got dressed and fled the flat.

Police were alerted and were shown a photo of McDermott. He was traced later that day, but made no comment.

Sentencing, Lord Arthurson told McDermott: “This criminal conduct was predatory and opportunistic.

“Your victims had never met you before. They were effectively strangers to you.

“By your conduct, you have inflicted enduring trauma.”

He was also placed on the sex offenders register and has been banned indefinitely from contacting or approaching either woman.
