While photographing Andrew Doyle from the Ferguslie Park Community Council. Where Andrew was trying to highlight the changes he’d like to see in order to make better for all its residents. Things like planting fruit trees on the unused land for everyone to benefit from as well as teaching children about foraging and what we can and cannot eat that grows in the wild all around us.
Then there was the need to draw attention to the disappearing road markings such as the circled 20 miles limit long rubbed out by years of traffic going over them. Much like the bicycles only lanes markings which where near impossible to see cars where no parking all over them.
Plus wouldn’t it be nice if we cleaned up the rail bridges heading into Ferguslie long covered in graffiti while adding welcome to Ferguslie signs to entice people in, if not just to allow strangers passing through to know where they are.
Saying that the railway have placed discouraging signs “WE ARE WATCHING YOU” on their rail fences which only leaves people feeling they where being watched when entering Ferguslie and rather off putting. What’s worse the same signs where trying to discourage littering when the place was covered in graffiti and garbage. So there effectiveness was less than effective..
But what shocked us the most is when we walked into the old Ferguslie park prefabs known local as cowboy valley which was nothing more than a massive rubbish tip full of burnt out tyres, asbestos and every type of building rubble imaginable.
We even stumbled over a brand new “still in the plastic wrapping” linoleum roll, that would have looked nice on anyone’s floor instead of being tipped illegally in the valley..
This left us both with one question on our minds. Given the amount of fly tipping and the worst being asbestos and the tyres, to which both had been set on fire putting residents health at risk. Why hasn’t anyone cleaning this up this long over due mess or even blocking off the entrance to prevent further pollution being dumped.
So when Renfrewshire council has is next community wide clean up day, why not bring everyone together and clean up cowboy valley while adding concrete barriers to prevent the real cowboys from dumping all over our streets. Or better still, make all council waste points free to use instead of charging people who in turn break the law to save a buck….
