Renfrewshire Council has agreed to explore the feasibility of creating a local fan zone for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following Scotland’s qualification.
The motion, brought by Councillors Jim Paterson and Andy Steel, asks officers to assess whether a Renfrewshire-based fan zone could be delivered in a way that is accessible, inclusive and community-focused.
Councillor Paterson told the chamber the World Cup qualification had generated “a huge sense of positivity” across the country and said the council should look at ways to harness that locally.
He said: “What really struck me wasn’t just the atmosphere in the stadium, but the celebrations afterwards across towns and communities. That kind of positivity doesn’t come around often.”
Several councillors stressed that any fan zone should not simply be “a big beer garden” and should include space for families, young people and those with additional needs.
Councillor Ian McMillan said Scotland’s qualification could inspire a new generation, adding: “For many young people, this will be the first World Cup Scotland has qualified for in their lifetime. That matters.”
The feasibility study will now be carried out by officers, with findings expected to return to councillors at a later date.
