A Paisley primary school and nursery have been praised for the support they provide to children’s wellbeing and inclusion following an inspection by Education Scotland.
Staff and pupils at St Charles’ Primary School and its Early Learning and Childcare Class received a Very Good grading for wellbeing, equality and inclusion after inspectors visited earlier this year.
Inspectors also awarded four Good gradings across other areas.
The report highlighted the friendly and welcoming atmosphere across the school and nursery. Inspectors said children showed kindness towards each other, staff and visitors.
They also praised the strong relationships between staff and children, saying this helped create a positive ethos throughout the school community.
Inspectors found children took pride in their school and nursery and engaged enthusiastically in learning.
The report also praised the nursery’s forest kindergarten activities, where children develop skills through outdoor play and exploring the natural world together.
Staff and pupils were recognised for taking on leadership opportunities and helping improve the school and nursery.
Inspectors said staff worked collaboratively to support children’s wellbeing and create a nurturing environment where pupils felt cared for, valued and confident.
The school was also praised for building strong links with the local community and partner organisations.
Head teacher Grace Hannigan said: “Wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do here at St Charles’ Primary School. We believe children learn and develop best in a positive and supportive learning environment where they feel valued and loved. We are delighted HMIE inspectors recognised our commitment to wellbeing, equality and inclusion.
“Our wonderful children show enthusiasm and kindness every day. Positive relationships between children, families and staff are the cornerstone of our school community.
“We will continue to build on our strengths to ensure every child can thrive and succeed.”
Emma Rodden, education convener for Renfrewshire Council, said: “Wellbeing is at the heart of what St Charles’ Primary School and Early Learning and Childcare Class do. I’m pleased the positive, nurturing ethos has been recognised by inspectors. When children feel cared for, they develop confidence and are eager to learn.
“The strong relationships between pupils and staff further help children to thrive. This is strengthened through leadership opportunities and learning beyond the classroom. Together, staff have created a welcoming and supportive learning environment for all.”
Janie O’Neill added: “This is a very positive report for St Charles’ Primary School and Early Learning and Childcare Class. It reflects the dedication of staff in creating a nurturing, inclusive environment where children feel valued and supported to achieve their potential.
“I am particularly pleased to see the recognition of strong relationships, leadership opportunities and the focus on wellbeing, which are key to helping every child thrive. Well done to Mrs Hannigan and her staff team, all the children and the whole St Charles’ community.”
