Customers at Specsavers in Johnstone can now recycle old glasses, cases and contact lens packaging thanks to a new in-store recycling initiative.

The store has installed a dedicated recycling box as part of a nationwide rollout by Specsavers, allowing customers to dispose of unwanted eye care products responsibly rather than sending them to landfill.

The scheme operates in partnership with MyGroup, a recycling and waste management company which processes hard-to-recycle plastics. The materials are separated, sorted and recycled before being transformed into products including joinery boards and furniture.

According to Specsavers, 72 tonnes of material were recycled through the scheme during 2025 – an increase of almost five tonnes compared with the previous year. The company says that amount is equivalent to the weight of a mature blue whale.

Helen Curran, Head of Sustainability for the UK and Ireland at Specsavers, said: “At Specsavers we believe that sustainability must show up in our everyday operations.

“Investing in customer recycling in every one of our UK stores is exactly that: a practical, tangible step that keeps valuable materials in circulation and makes it genuinely easy for our customers to be part of the solution.

“We look forward to seeing the positive impact of the increased roll out in the years ahead.”

The expansion means a further 300 Specsavers stores across the UK will offer recycling facilities. The initiative first launched in 2022 and is now available in every Specsavers store, allowing customers to recycle unwanted eye care products regardless of where they were originally purchased.

Customers wishing to use the service can visit the Specsavers store in Johnstone town centre.
