Schools across Renfrewshire will join a nationwide celebration of Scotland’s World Cup campaign this week as pupils take part in the World Cup Day of Dance
The event, taking place on Friday, 12th June, will see children combine football, music and Scottish country dancing ahead of Scotland’s opening World Cup match against Haiti.
Renfrewshire schools taking part include East Fulton Primary School, Riverbrae School, St Margaret’s Primary School, Langbank Primary School, St Catherine’s Primary School, St Paul’s Primary School and Foxes Early Learning.
Pupils will perform the “World Cup Wheech”, a dance created by pupils at Penpont Primary School alongside the Scottish Association of Teachers of Physical Education (SATPE). They will also take part in football-inspired dances including the “McTominay Two Step”, “Robertson Reel” and “Craig Gordons”.
The initiative is being organised by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and SATPE, with schools across Scotland encouraged to get active while supporting the national team.
Gary Coull, Chair of RSCDS, said: “It is wonderful to see so many schools from across Renfrewshire taking part in the World Cup Day of Dance.
“The World Cup Day of Dance is about using the excitement around Scotland’s World Cup campaign to get young people moving, smiling and celebrating together. By bringing football and Scottish country dancing into school halls, playgrounds and PE lessons, we can show pupils that traditional dance is energetic, social and great fun.”
The World Cup Day of Dance was launched at Hampden earlier this year and forms part of a nationwide effort to celebrate Scotland’s return to the World Cup while encouraging participation in physical activity.
Schools across the country will take part throughout the day as supporters count down to Steve Clarke’s side getting their tournament campaign under way.
