The former food store at Houston Court in Johnstone is set to be demolished after Renfrewshire councillors approved a contract worth more than £262,000.

Members of the Finance, Resources and Customer Services Policy Board backed plans on Thursday, 11th June, to appoint Caskie Limited to carry out the demolition works.

The approved contract has a value of £262,305.57 excluding VAT, including a contingency allowance. The demolition contract itself is valued at £238,459.61.

Work is scheduled to begin on 13th July and be completed by 2nd October 2026.

The project forms part of wider plans to regenerate Johnstone town centre.

According to council documents, clearing the site will help create two new business units and a new green link between Houstoun Square and Ludovic Square. The plans also include reconfigured parking, public spaces, planting and drainage improvements.

Funding for the project will come from a £200,000 allocation from the Scottish Government’s Place Based Investment Programme, alongside £62,305.57 from town centre regeneration funding previously approved by the council.

The proposals tie in with Renfrewshire Council’s adopted Johnstone Town Centre Vision Framework, which identifies new commercial development, public realm improvements and enhanced pedestrian links between Houstoun Square and Ludovic Square as key projects for the town centre over the coming years.
