Lidl has launched a public consultation on plans to build a new supermarket on Linwood Road in Paisley, with information leaflets now being delivered to homes in the surrounding area ahead of a planning application being submitted.

The proposed development is for the former St James Business Park site on Linwood Road, next to Wendy’s and opposite Phoenix Retail Park, close to Asda, McDonald’s and Costa Coffee.

The site covers around 1.1 hectares and is a cleared brownfield site which previously contained the St James Business Park building. It is bounded by Linwood Road to the north, commercial units to the south and west, and Wendy’s drive-thru restaurant and East Avenue to the east.

According to the consultation documents, Lidl plans to build a modern supermarket with a glazed frontage and landscaped parking area.

The proposed store would have a gross internal area of 2,206 square metres, including a net sales area of 1,529 square metres.

Access to the supermarket would be from East Avenue.

Plans include 116 parking spaces, comprising six accessible bays, nine parent and child spaces and two rapid electric vehicle charging bays.

The proposal also includes reconfiguring the Wendy’s drive-thru car park to allow access into the Lidl site. Lidl says the number of parking spaces available for Wendy’s customers would remain unchanged.

If approved, the store would open daily from 8am until 10pm.

Lidl says there would normally be one delivery to the store each day. Waste would be collected by the same delivery vehicle to reduce HGV movements within the site.

The retailer says the development would provide:

  • A new Lidl supermarket
  • An in-store bakery
  • Greater shopping choice through a new discount supermarket
  • A contemporary building designed to complement the surrounding area
  • Employment opportunities for local residents
  • Pay at the Living Wage Foundation rate of £13.45 an hour for eligible employees, with no zero-hours contracts.

Residents are now being asked to give their views before the plans are finalised and submitted to Renfrewshire Council.

The consultation is available online through a questionnaire, while printed questionnaires have also been distributed with the consultation leaflets.

The questionnaire asks residents where they usually do most of their food shopping, whether they support the proposed Lidl store, and provides space for additional comments.

People taking part are also asked to agree that their comments and personal details can be shared with third parties working on Lidl’s behalf and with the local planning authority as part of the planning process.

Lidl says all feedback received by 12th July 2026 will be considered and, where possible and appropriate, used to make changes to the proposals before the planning application is submitted.

The company hopes the planning application will be received and validated by Renfrewshire Council during July 2026.
