A former RAF Regiment Gunner is preparing to climb one of the world’s highest and most dangerous mountains to raise money for Scotland’s veterans charity, Erskine.

Danny Pawson, 44, will attempt to scale Mount Manaslu in the Nepalese Himalayas later this year. Standing at 8,163 metres, it is one of only 14 mountains in the world higher than 8,000 metres.

The climb is expected to take 31 days and will see Danny enter what climbers call the “Death Zone” where oxygen levels are dangerously low.

Danny, who served during the Iraq War in 2003, joined the RAF at the age of 17. He was mainly based at RAF Lossiemouth with 51 Squadron and completed operational tours in Iraq and Kuwait before leaving the military after five years.

Speaking ahead of the challenge, Danny said: “This challenge has been a long time in the making. The military instilled in me a mindset of resilience and determination, and I have carried that into everything I have done since leaving service.

“Climbing Manaslu is about pushing myself to the absolute limit, but more importantly it is about recognising the sacrifices made by the wider veterans community.

“Erskine plays a vital role in supporting veterans and their families across Scotland. I have seen first-hand the importance of that support network, and this is my way of giving something meaningful back.

“If taking on one of the toughest mountains in the world helps raise awareness and funds for that work, then every step will be worth it.”

Danny said the expedition is expected to cost around £20,000. He has already put in £15,000 of his own money towards specialist equipment and logistics and is now looking for sponsorship support.

Wing Commander Ian Cumming MBE, chief executive of Erskine, said: “Danny’s attempt on Mount Manaslu is an exceptional undertaking that speaks volumes about his character and his continued commitment to the Armed Forces community.

“Challenges of this scale demand extraordinary courage, preparation and resolve, and we are immensely proud that he has chosen to support Erskine.

“Every pound raised through Danny’s climb will directly support veterans and their families across Scotland, helping us provide high-quality care, housing, and community services to those who have served.

“At a time when demand for our support continues to grow, initiatives like this are not only inspiring, they are essential to ensuring we can continue to be there for those who need us most.”
