A man who carried out a murder bid against another man went on to stab his own leg and blamed his victim.

Thomas Irvine, 50, struck Allan Wheelan in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, on 16th April 2026.

The High Court in Glasgow was told that Irvine, who had a knife, his son Thomas junior and Mr Wheelan came together on Aurs Drive.

Prosecutor Ali Murray said: “Irvine approached Mr Wheelan with his right hand behind his back.

“He then lunged forward and stabbed Mr Wheelan.

“Mr Wheelan was unable to defend himself as he was carrying two bags.

“A struggle took place and Mr Wheelan was pushed to the ground.

“Irvine stood over him and continued to stab him.”

It was stated that this caused Mr Wheelan to have puncture wounds to the left side of his body, buttocks and lower legs.

Irvine went on to pull Mr Wheelan to his feet where they continued to struggle.

An unknown man separated the pair.

Irvine was heard to shout as he walked away: “I’ve stabbed him, I’ve stabbed him, I’ve got him, I’ve got him.”

Mr Murray added: “A member of the public saw Irvine stab his own legs before running off.”

Irvine and his son went to the home of a woman he knew.

Thomas junior shouted: “Help my dad has been stabbed.”

Police attended the area and found Mr Wheelan being attended to by paramedics. He refused to tell officers who attacked him.

Officers were directed to the property where Irvine had gone and was found lying in the hallway with blood-soaked trousers.

Mr Murray said: “He told police he had been stabbed in the legs and that Mr Wheelan was responsible. He was taken to hospital.”

A CCTV review showed that Mr Wheelan was not responsible for stabbing Irvine.

Officers spoke to Thomas junior, who told them that he had been given a knife to hide and directed them to where it was.

When Irvine was discharged from hospital on April 17, he was charged by police. He replied: “He was the one who attacked me. I never had a knife.”

It was stated that Mr Wheelan suffered three stab wounds which were closed with stitches.

Irvine pleaded guilty to attempted murder.

The court was told that Irvine’s previous convictions include an assault to intent to rob at Paisley Sheriff Court for which he received a four-year sentence.

Irvine was jailed in 2001 for five years following an assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement at the High Court in Glasgow.

Irvine received a two-year sentence at Paisley Sheriff Court in November 2016 for having a knife in a public place without a reasonable excuse or lawful authority as well as behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

Sentence was deferred pending background reports. Irvine was remanded in custody meantime.
